The Senate Finance Committee is launching a formal investigation into how nonprofit hospitals are earning their tax-exempt status and how the Internal Revenue Service is enforcing those standards, the committee announced Feb. 25.
Sen. Charles Grassley (R-Iowa), the committee’s chairman, launched the probe by sending a letter to Internal Revenue Service Commissioner Charles Rettig, asking about the hospitals the IRS has reviewed since April 2018 to determine whether those hospitals are complying with requirements to keep their tax-exempt status.
