Coalition of Leading Employer Groups Applauds Renewed Effort to Crack Down on Anti-Competitive Practices and Increase Transparency in Hospitals and Health Systems
“It is Critical That We Take Action to Create a More Honest and Transparent System That Will Bring Down Costs for Patients and Businesses Alike”
WASHINGTON, DC – (May 8, 2023) – Better Solutions for Healthcare, a national coalition of business and healthcare industry leaders, announced its endorsement of the bipartisan Healthy Competition for Better Care Act. Introduced by Sens. Mike Braun (R-IN) and Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), this legislation will help lower health care costs by addressing anti-competitive practices and increasing transparency in hospitals and health systems.
“We cannot solve the health care affordability crisis without addressing the leading role that hospitals and health systems are playing to artificially drive up prices,” said Alex Schriver, executive director of Better Solutions. “American families and employers are the ones who suffer from these anti-competitive practices, and we commend the Senators for making this challenge a bipartisan priority. It is critical that we take action to create a more honest and transparent system that will bring down costs for patients and businesses alike.”
The Healthy Competition for Better Care Act addresses key priorities of the Better Solutions coalition, which launched its national campaign earlier this week. National employer groups that have joined Better Solutions include American Benefits Council, National Alliance of Healthcare Purchaser Coalitions, Public Sector Healthcare Roundtable and Business Group on Health. The coalition also includes AHIP and BlueCross BlueShield Association. Better Solutions is focused on four main areas:
- Promote Hospital Competition
- Enforce Federal Price Transparency for Hospital Charges
- Rein in Hospital Price Markups
- Ensure Honest Billing Practices by Hospitals
